Book of the Year at Woden Library

On Friday I met my friend Lou for a coffee then we dashed through the icy Canberra galeforce winds to the Woden Library for the announcement for the Children's Book Council's Book of the Year 2010.

We were met with a lively performance by Canberra Grammar students - of Lisa Shanahan's Bear and Chook at Sea, complete with fluffy chook and towel-toting bear.

It was also an absolute thrill to have Rosemary Thomas, CBCA judge for the ACT, to present the awards. After a carpet-thumping drum roll before each announcement, Rosemary spoke on each winning book (including the honour books) and talked us about her phenomenal reading and judging experience.

Below, Rebecca Kemble, president of the ACT branch of the CBCA reveals the winners onscreen and the kids hold up the books as they are announced.

The kids had so much fun holding up the winners and it was wonderful to revel in all the excitement. There were some surprises amongst the winners (we all have our favourites!) and some absolute no-surprises, too.

Here's to a fantastic upcoming Book Week. Check out a list of the winners right here.
