Review: This is New York

It just so happens that New York City is one of my favourite places on the planet, so how could I honestly go though life without having this book in my collection? (yes, I also let my kids read these, too...)

I visited New York for the first time in 1997 and can I just say that this book, penned in 1960 has pretty much got the place covered. But that is just Sasek's way... even 50 years ago, this talented author and artist knew exactly what idiosyncrasies and detail perfectly comprises this magnificent place - and it's all here for us to enjoy.

From the strikers in the street to the magnificent city scapes and that gobsmacking Central Park... from Park Avenue to Harlem, This is New York covers the rich gamut of cultural influence that makes this city great.

With Sasek's classic and fascinating wordage, kids can tour this fabulous city and take in all the astonishing vistas along the way, rendered in divinely retro, brightly coloured pictures the This Is... series is known for.

From every street corner there is a different vista - one minute you are peering down the lanes of Little Italy, the next you are are agog at the Art Deco magnificence of the Chrysler Building? And what of the cityscape from the top of the Empire State Building? The Hudson River, Wall Street, Greenwich Village, Soho, Tribeca, Downtown, Times Square...

Where do you stop?

You don't. And you enjoy every detailed moment - from hot dog carts to squirrels, this is one Sasek book you don't want to miss.
