Review: Who am I? and Guess Who?

Using a range of beautiful illustrations from The Mammals of Australia by John Gould (1863), this collection of images really does need to be exposed to the eyes and hearts of our nation’s children. Author and publisher Susan Hall has honoured this need by creating two books that perfectly complement each other in Who am I? and Guess Who?

Who am I? is a board book that teaches kids about our most precious native animals – from koalas to emus and magpies. Each double page spread asks the reader ‘who am I?’ before announcing the animal’s name and adding an informative line about said creature.

In Guess Who?, this idea is expounded upon in a firm-paged, soft cover book that asks the reader ‘guess who?’ before giving a first-letter clue. On the opposing page, kids are invited to lift a flap to take a peek at the animal, and also learn several interesting facts.

This book is a wonderful way for kids to discover more about our country’s amazing animals, and delight in playing peek-a-boo with the stunning illustrations. It also features information on the artist and notes on the Library’s extensive artistic collection.

With consummate construction and design elements the Library does so beautifully, these books are a must-have for any Australian library – or home.
