Review: Our Australian Girl: Meet Grace

Grace is an orphan, stuck living with her uncle. He too, feels as though he is burdened by her, reminding him every day that his own child is no longer here.

London, 1808. Life is tough for young Grace, made responsible for her own survival.

When Grace begins stealing apples, craving the nourishment and sweet flavour, she is caught and taken to the police. These words leave Grace confused and scared: "I sentence you to seven years penal servitude and transportation to the colonies."

Soon, though, as she realises that this means being taken to 'the end of the world', rather than being hanged as she had feared, Grace is excited. A new life, a new beginning, away from Uncle Ord.

Readers can't help but cheer Grace on. Secretly my favourite of the Our Australian Girl characters, Grace is gutsy and desperately needs a new beginning.

The next installment of Grace's story will be an exciting one, showing how our country was originally formed.
