Review: Our Australian Girl: Meet Letty

As one of the first books in this exciting new series, Meet Letty is wonderful, and sets the tone for the books about "a girl like me in a time gone by".

The year is 1841. Letty's older sister, Lavinia, is heading for Australia to start a new life, but things take an unexpected turn when Letty accidentally ends up on the ship with her.

Ahead of them: three months at sea, and promise of a new life in a new country. Will the two girls survive this journey to start living their dreams?

Meet Letty is the story of the journey to a new land, a journey of endurance with terrible conditions and widespread fatal disease. The huge dream, the risk, of heading to a new land that was previously just for prisoners - heading into the wide world of danger and uncertainty.

Watch out for more of Letty's story, which will continue through 2011, as well as stories of more children (a convict girl, a gold rush girl and a Federation girl) in the Our Australian Girl series.

Reading beautifully written, adventure-filled fiction while learning about Australia's history? Just brilliant.
