Review: Our Australian Girl: Meet Poppy

Our introduction to Poppy, the next in the Our Australian Girl series, is powerful

Poppy lives in an orphanage, as does her brother Gus. Together, they try to remember their Aboriginal mother and Chinese father, hoping to one day solve the mystery of why one died and one has disappeared.

When Poppy discovers a plan to take Gus away from the orphanage, separating the pair, Gus runs away instead, promising to come back for his sister.

But all their plans change when a family is set to adopt Poppy.

Can she escape the life she doesn't want? And perhaps create her own dream?

In 1864, life for a half-Aboriginal, half-Chinese orphan would have been tough. In this time of racism, immigration, hardship and the Gold Rush in Victoria, times were hard and expectations high. Wang gives us a glimpse into what this girl's life might have been like.

These books are a fantastic way to make history fun and accessible, as well as being a lovely introduction to the genre of historical fiction for young readers.
