Featured Father: Dave Hackett

Happy father's day, Dave!

What is your name?
Dave Hackett

What do you do?
I'm a cartoonist and children's author, having written five novels, six how-to cartooning books, and two picture books.

How many kids do you have?
Three (age 4, 9 and 14)... and a horse, a cat and three neurotic chickens.

What kind of Dad are you?
Pretty hands-on. I do a lot of work from home, and early in the mornings, which frees me up for a descent amount of one-on-one time.

What do your kids call you?
Dad, Daddy, that stinky guy...

What do you like most about being a Dad?
I love to hear our children laugh, and I love being first in line for the leftovers at dinner time.

What is your favourite book about Dads?
We have an old children's book called Missing Dad which we've read (to death!) to all of our children. We love it because of the pop up pics, but most of all becuase over time we've changed the words considerably, (which we tend to do a little in our family). It's pretty battered, and most of the heads have been ripped off the pop-up creatures, but to us it will always be a classic.

Can you tell us the name of your newest book? Will it be good for Dads?
My latest book is called Sumo Granny Smackdown and yes, it will totally appeal to Dads - seriously, what Dad wouldn't want to spend their time reading an action packed comedy-whodunnit-thriller based around an enormous, sun-dress-wearing angry woman the size of eight polar bears?
