Review: Gangsta Granny

Ben’s Granny isn’t all that different to many other grannies - she has white hair, false teeth and tucks tissues up her sleeve.  She does have a few unique quirks though. There’s her fondness for cabbage and a small detail about her past. You see, Ben’s granny was an international jewel thief.

Little does Ben suspect that his gangsta granny is still planning her greatest jewel heist ever – stealing the crown jewels from the Tower of London. Friday nights with Granny have suddenly become the most exciting part of Ben’s week.

Mostly amusing and at times quite touching, Gangsta Granny is another fantastic novel for children by well known UK comedian and writer David Walliams. Well known for his work with Matt Lucas as part of the Little Britain comedy team, Walliams is also well established as a writer whose works include the children’s novels The Boy in the Dress and Billionaire Boy.

I’m not a particular fan of Little Britain humour and confess I was hesitant when I first read Walliams books. There was no need for concern, however. The books are extremely funny, filled with the type of silly humour that appeals to primary school-aged readers. Ben’s ballroom dancing obsessed parents, his Granny’s nosy neighbour and their attempts to steal the crown jewels make for a very entertaining story.

The book also has its thoughtful moments, with some interesting insights into parental expectations, the generation gap and the very special bond that can exist between grandparents and their grandchildren.

Gangsta Granny has joined The Boy in the Dress as a favourite in our home.
