Review: The Great Big Aussie Easter Egg Hunt

From the eggy endpapers to the free CD with some fabulous Eastery tunes, this is another iconic Colin Buchanan book that celebrates this special time of the year.

With lolloping rhyming text, we follow a band of Aussie critters as they navigate the national terrain, from the sands of Uluru, through Kakadu, the Great Barrier Reef, down through Melbourne and the forests of Tasmania to the tippety top of the Snowy Mountains.

Along the way, our friends are scoring (at the MCG, football in hand) and digging (wombat underground), scaling (Sydney Harbour Bridge) and snapping (old man crocodile) a tumble of vibrant eggs, in the greatest Easter egg hunt ever.

Chris Kennett's bright, priceless illustrations add a humouristic punch. I particularly love the lizard going hell for leather in a nest of Easter eggs, the wombat with its tongue hanging out at the sight of a chocolaty underground stash - and the superstar - who else but our beloved bilby, all but chocolate-dipped on the very last page of the book.

A delicious Eastery treat for little ones, not to mention a glorious way to explore our beautiful country and its unique fauna.
