News: In Living Memory exhibition, Civic Library

Canberrans are being treated to a moving exhibition - In Living Memory - at Civic Library. The exhibition coincides with 2012 NAIDOC Week celebrations and runs from Tuesday 3 July to Tuesday 31 July 2012 (during normal opening hours).

In Living Memory features images from a series of 1000 black and white photographs from the official records of the former NSW Aborigines Welfare Board from 1919 to 1966. The exhibition also includes contemporary images of elders, families and communities, taken by Indigenous photographer Mervyn Bishop.

In Living Memory includes photographs of people at Wreck Bay, wedding photos of couples in Weston NSW, images of children from the bush visiting Sydney for annual summer camps, and studio portraits of young Aboriginal women.

Heartbreaking. Inspirational. Important.

The exhibition has been provided courtesy of the State Records Authority of New South Wales and Aboriginal Affairs New South Wales.
