National Bookshop Day
On Saturday 11th August 2012, Australian Booksellers ask you to support your community by joining with your local bookshop to celebrate National Bookshop Day.
In locations all across Australia, bookshops will be celebrating. Buoyed by the success of the inaugural National Bookshop Day in 2011, individual shops will showcase their place in the community by inviting local authors and all members of the community to participate in readings and conversation about books, with a wide range of other activities.
Supported by the Australian Booksellers Association, bookshops will be reinforcing their message that local bookshops are an integral part of the Australian way of life. They are the first point of contact between the reader and books . . . in 2011, 60.4 million books were sold in the Australian retail book trade representing $1,078 million (Nielsen Bookscan). Children’s books made up a quarter of the sales with fiction books at 27% and non-fiction at 48%.
Throughout Australia, hundreds of shops will be holding events and having activities, or simply saying thank you to the readers, writers, libraries and schools that support them.
