Review: Pookie Aleera is not my Boyfriend

In a country town, the students of 6A share their stories. There is the usual mix of children – outgoing, shy, sporty, academic, sad, silly and thoughtful and each has a story to tell about what they are thinking and feeling as they go through their day.

A mixture of humour and thoughtful reflection, Pookie Aleera is not my Boyfriend demonstrates the value of friendship and the power of a well-baked ANZAC biscuit.

This appealing verse novel shares the perspectives of several students, both boys and girls, as well as occasional entries from the new class teacher Ms Arthur and Mr Korsky the groundskeeper. Constable Dawe’s accounts of his class visits to discuss safety issues are hilarious with the students of 6A keeping the poor man flustered with their questions and interruptions.

Through the different student perspectives, Herrick is able to highlight the importance of friendship and belonging. Mick’s choice to step up as a leader within his friendship group offers a simple but powerful lesson in the value of leading by example and with compassion.

An enjoyable novel, Pookie Aleera is not my Boyfriend will appeal most to readers who enjoy stories that focus on people and their thoughts and feelings.
