Review: Run Like a Rabbit and Growl Like a Tiger
Much-loved Australian author/illustrator Alison Lester has released two titles in a board book series for toddlers, Read Along with Alison Lester.
Run Like a Rabbit and Growl Like a Tiger invite young children to read along and join in with actions or sounds as they meet a range of animals (and one lone fairy).
The books are very appealing with simple rhyming text and a real sense of invitation for children to join in and take part in the story. The opportunity to get children involved with actions and sounds means that these aren’t so much bedtime stories as a chance to have some fun reading books together before bathtime or during the day.
These books are a wonderful way for young children to learn new words, both the names of the animals and the different movements and sounds. The pastel backgrounds (patterns for Tiger and polka dots for Rabbit) make a great backdrop for Alison’s fun illustrations and brightly coloured text.
Alison Lester is one of Australia’s best known and loved picture book authors and illustrators. Her books Are we there yet?, Ernie Dances to the Didgeridoo, Magic Beach and Imagine are have been read and re-read in our home without ever losing their appeal. In 2012, Alison Lester became Australia's first Children's Book Laureate, a position shared with Boori Monty Pryor.
Growl Like a Tiger and Run Like a Rabbit are great gift ideas for babies and toddlers. They are also ideal to include with a new baby gift as they offer lots of opportunities for parents to make the kinds of funny voices and sounds that capture the attention of little ones and help them to take their first steps towards a lifelong love of books and reading.
