How simple would life be if we only wanted to know the answer to two simple things? The Little Eskimo wants to know just two. He wants to know if he'll be a great hunter one day and he also wants to know what's on the other side of Great Ice Lake.
But there's a problem. The Other Side of the lake is forbidden. No one is allowed there, most especially not little eskimos.
One day, the Little Eskimo runs into Hare - he of the large ears. Perhaps Hare has heard if the Little Eskimo will one day be a great hunter. He may have also heard what's on the other side of Great Ice Lake.
Alas, Hare doesn't know the answer to either of these questions, but he suggests the Little Eskimo ask Fox - he of the keen sense of smell.
The Little Eskimo asks the same questions of Fox - "Would you happen to have smelled what's on the other side of the Great Ice Lake?" But Fox hasn't sniffed a thing. Perhaps Owl, with her fine sense of sight, will be able to reveal all.
And on goes our little friend, meandering across the great white expanses of one of the most stunning backdrops on Earth - seeking answers to his most reasonable questions - until he finally meets Whale, who tells of a little island in the middle of the lake. On this island lives a being who knows all the Earth's creatures - and whale can lead the way.
The Little Eskimo has no idea what he's in for - and neither will you.
This fable-like story is an homage to the child within us all - who looks to the future, brimming with questions and perhaps also fear about What Will Be. Author Cali has written a timeless, thoughtful and beautiful tale that reminds children the future is very much in their hands.
