Review: My Superhero

Oh, so lovely to see a book illustrated by the glorious Moira Court, whose illustrations I have long-admired. This new book by the talented Chris Owen combines with Moira's superlative retro modern illustration skills to create something very special indeed.

It's all about superheroes. Big ones. Tall ones. Muscly ones (because that's how they usually come). Superheroes are also blessed with good looks, don't you know?

Superheroes of the animal kingdom really like to spend their weekends catching crooks. They do this by using high-tech equipment such as body armour (enter an armadillo), or they leap buildings in a single bound (enter a high-flying mountain goat).

They also dive deeper than a submarine (enter a whale, complete with superhero mask) or squash cars completely flat (you guessed it, a bemasked elephant). And as we learn more about all these very special superhero beasts, we're also treated to a series of lift-the-flap double-page spreads that reveal the narrators Real Life Superhero - just bit by bit, little by little. He's not like all the other superheros - I wonder who he could be?

And why is he a superhero? Well, you'll have to read it and see - and you'll more than likely, absolutely agree.

With an addendum page of superhero facts on each of the animals featured in the book, this is a prime read for animal lovers, and for anyone who adores super fine illustrations and clever, creative stories. A winning blend, wouldn't you say?
