Review: Dot to Dot

It will soon be Dot's birthday. Dot shares a birthday with her grandma, who's also called Dot! But Dot and Dot can't celebrate together, alas, as they live far, far away.

Dot lives in London and Grandma Dot lives in New York City.

Dot decides she'd like to send a special card to Grandma Dot to celebrate their birthdays, but she misses the post. Now Grandma Dot won't receive her card on time. The solution?

Dot will simply have to fling herself over to New York. Or bounce. Or ask some bees to buzz the card on over. Or dig a tunnel all the way underneath the ocean.

Alas, Dot doesn't get much further than her own garden. Poor Dot.

Unbeknownst to young Dot, Grandma Dot, way over in NYC, is also keen to share a birthday with her granddaughter. Can the eldery Dot make it happen?

This is a truly special book. Beautifully written and superbly illustrated in retro, tri-colour style, it's one of my favourite books this year.

The book is hard cover with dust jacket, and tells two sides of the Dot to Dot story - with one half being told by young Dot, and the other half (you need to flip the book over and turn it around) being told by Grandma. I simply adore how the two stories meet in the middle. But I don't want to give anything away!

Both kids and grown-up lovers of superb picture books will simply adore this title.
