Review: Pirate Gold

You always know when you pick up a Michael Salmon creation. Mottly animal characters draw you into adventure from the front cover. Multiple points of action keep the emerging reader glued to the page while older readers take their time absorbing the storyline as well.

Pirate Gold, the latest action comedy mystery could have been a chapter book for Middle Primary but that would not have allowed for double page spreads of colour and fun. This picture book format gives space for wandering eyes to pick up added details that deepen the story and add humour just for the heck of it. Did you notice the pink parrot in fashionable nightcap snoozing in a coconut tree? How about the family of crabs scuttling in order of size?

Captain Porker is greedy and suspicious. He wants to make sure no one touches his precious treasure, but his plan goes horribly wrong. Who stole his treasure chest? You’ll have to suspend disbelief to enter into the spirit of this rollicking tale, but the effort will be worth it.
