Review: Prodigy (Legend #2)

After escaping from the Republic’s stronghold of Los Angeles, June and Day arrive in Vegas just as the unthinkable happens: the Elector Primo dies, and his son Anden takes his place. The pair join the Patriot forces to further undermine the Republic and gain access to the Colonies and freedom. The Patriots ask one thing in return for their assistance – June and Day must assassinate the new Elector.

Following on from Legend, the gripping introduction to this trilogy, Marie Lu maintains the pace and suspense of this fantastic young adult dystopian thriller. Numerous plot twists and turns keep readers guessing, as June and Day are forced to question all that they believe to be true about the Republic, the Patriots and their own choices in their fight for freedom and revenge.

As they struggle to understand their role in the unfolding drama – should they follow their initial plans to help the Patriots or should they trust that Anden will overthrow the corrupt regime ruled over by his twisted father – truths are revealed that add further confusion to an already chaotic situation.

Lu draws readers into the suspense of the story through the alternating first person narrative by June and Day. Their growing attraction to each other adds further tension and conflict to the story.

As I did with Legend, I had trouble putting Prodigy aside, always wanting to read just one more page to see how the story continued to develop. The tension-filled ending has me waiting in anticipation for the final book in the trilogy, Champion, which is due for release in late 2013.

The dystopian setting, pace and action/thriller style of the Legend trilogy should appeal to fans of Suzanne Collins’ popular Hunger Games books.
