Review: Love (The Invisible Tree)

There is one thing that I need most! I need it more than tea and toast!

This gorgeously illustrated picture book reminds children that love is a wonderful gift to both receive and give away. A gentle reminder to share and care for others as well as enjoy the affection we receive, The Invisible Tree: Love has simple rhyming text that will appeal to toddlers and young children.

The Invisible Tree: Love is the first in a series of books that works through the nine ‘fruits of the Spirit’ listed in the Bible (Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-control). Although the series is based on two Bible verses, the text and illustrations do not draw attention to this and the only overt biblical reference is a page at the end of the book containing the text of the two verses (Galatians 5: 22-23).

The illustrations in this book simply captivated me. Illustrator Henry Smith has created the collage-style illustrations, which also incorporate the text of the story, from found, recycled and hand-made papers. The Invisible Tree series is author Kirrily Lowe’s first series of books.

The Invisible Tree: Love is ideally suited to church Sunday school groups and Christian families, but it should also appeal to a more general audience as a simple story to encourages children that love is about giving as well as receiving. A portion of sales from all Invisible Tree books will be donated to the Compassion Child Survival Program.

The Invisible Tree: Joy was also published in May 2013. The third book, Patience, is scheduled for publication in November 2013.
