Review: ABC London

A treat for travellers with young children, or those with a penchant for the British capital, ABC London is a fun way to introduce and begin exploring the city and its history.

London is full of iconic buildings, landmarks and experiences, many of them unique to the city, and here they are presented by way of the alphabet. For anyone who has visited London, this is a chance to see what you can recognise.

I loved the colourful collage and paper-cut illustrations for each letter of the alphabet, the speciality of Kate Slater whose other work features the same technique.

There are a few words included which seem a bit obscure, and as a result might not have obvious meaning to people who are not familiar with London (X is for eXiles and V is for Villain spring to mind). However, the book is about sharing the city with those who may or may not be know it, and does come with an alphabet glossary in the back.

In this pictorial tour you’ll find, amongst others, that C is for Changing the Guard (at Buckingham Palace, of course), L is for Lions (there are apparently more than 10,000 statues of them dotted around the city), O is for the Observatory at Greenwich, P is for the famous market at Portobello Road, and U is for Underground (one of many ways to get around).

What else makes London London? Read ABC London and find out.
