Review: Bird and Bear

Bird and Bear are two friends who love discovering the world around them. One particular day, Bird wakes Bear by tapping on the window. It's Bear's birthday! and the pair are in for some birthday fun.

Bear gobbles breakfast, gets dressed, brushes his teeth--and the pair head out go into the bright sunshiny day, pulling a barrow packed with special birthday picnic food.

Down the street, through the park, over the beach, up the steps and onto the pier where Bear notices his reflection in the water--it's someone just like him! And there is a Bird in the water, too! Someone just like Bird!
This dialogue-driven book focusing on the relationship between two dear friends is a story the young will warmly relate to, along with the everyday joys of just being--strolling, playing, discovering nature and the closeness to be found in a good friend.

Ann James' whimsical, pastelly illustrations are just pure delight, and will entrance both children and adults. I particularly love the pages of multiple-action, where Bear and Bird are playing, and simply enjoying being young.

Gorgeous.
