Not that we need any excuse to visit this exquisite city, but any excuse will certainly do. Our young jet-setter and her grandad arrive in Paris, as so many do, via the Métro (Place Maubert).
As they surface near the Cafe Métro, wonder quickly takes hold. It's market day in the square and there's so much happening! Fountains spurting, dogs meandering, baguettes tucked under arms and greengrocers stacking crates of fresh produce.
Our girl is entranced. Wandering down streets where the houses lean together, the duo explore the local Boulevard and make their way to Place St-Michel, along the River Seine and to the top of Notre Dame, where Paris unfolds before them in all its splendour.
Next is Île St-Louis, lunch at a bistro, the Marais and Centre Pompidou--and who could surpass the jewel-like window display of a supreme pâtisserie, the Louvre, les Jardins Tuileries and the nighttime wonder of La Tour Eiffel.
This is a wondrously beautiful book with a darling narrative indicative of the youthful wonder of the travelling child. Pockets of information and facts (in small typeface) bring the history and wonder of Paris to kids, while the luscious, retro illustrations and divine detail add artistic joy. The colour palette is so good, it's almost edible.
A final lift-up page of the Eiffel Tower is a fine way to wrap up a breathtaking Parisian visit.
