Review: What's Your Favourite Animal?

A beautiful book full of animals nominated and illustrated by fourteen renowned children’s book illustrators.

Collected by Eric Carle, What’s Your Favourite Animal? presents a double-page spread from each artist. One by one, they reveal their favourite animal through an illustration accompanied by a written explanation. Some are short, while others are long. Some are funny, others serious. And several come with poems.

You may be surprised to learn that although he likes all animals, Eric Carle himself favours cats. The other illustrators - who include Jon Klassen, Mo Willems, Rosemary Wells, Lucy Cousins and others - have wide-ranging favourites. You’ll find everything from leopards and penguins, to bunnies and snails, and even an Amazonian Neotropical Lower River Tink-Tink! Can you guess what species that is?

Proceeds from What’s Your Favourite Animal? go towards The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, which feels completely appropriate given the museum’s aim.

There’s lots to enjoy, so read it from beginning to end, then dip in and out. An excellent way for children to discover different animals, and an entertaining book for both children and adults.
