Review: Flowerpot Farm

Books like this excite me! I am a firm believer in the importance of bringing up our children with a real appreciation of nature and the environment — and what better way to do this than inspire them to create their own garden.

With Flowerpot Farm to guide them, children will be able to grow a wide variety of fruit, vegetables and flowers — all in flowerpots that they have chosen and decorated themselves.

Every step along the way is beautifully illustrated and carefully explained, from how to select pots that will allow for proper drainage, what to plant when, good bugs and bad bags (and how to deal with the bad!), right through to harvesting and eating the produce.

Kids will love the fun craft ideas for making their own plant-identification labels and decorating their pots; they'll also adore all that digging around in dirt as they plant out their seedlings or start their own worm farm. Those lucky enough to have a large backyard to work with could go wild, growing everything from sunflowers to squash, lettuces to lemons; but even if you've only got a small balcony, the kids could still manage some radishes or strawberries (the strawberry tower made out of three pots of varying sizes looks incredible!).

We might be coming into the cooler months now in the southern hemisphere, but my daughter and I will be using the time to prepare our pots, ready for spring planting. Can't wait!
