Bobby has a serious problem. His teacher is a monster. A card-carrying, bonafide, terrifying creature with green skin, a snorty snout and terrible claws. She prevents all manner of paper plane-throwing and does plenty of roaring, making for a very unhappy Bobby.
One day, as Bobby trips through the local park, who does he see but Miss Kirby on a park bench. Things are a little awkward. Bobby wants to run and hide but he feels it would be impolite. He instead sits with Miss Kirby on the park bench and they begin to chat.
Suddenly, Miss Kirby's sunhat is snatched by the wind and Bobby runs to saves it. Miss Kirby is thrilled and the duo end up spending some happy time together ... and Bobby soon sees another side to his monstrous teacher.
This is not only a fabulous storyline with a delightful and humorous ending, it's page after page of visual delight--from the morphing Miss Kirby to the glorious park scenes and striking graphics. I simply adore the gentle messaging that adults are not always what they seem to young kids--and indeed, how we behave in front of children can absolutely alter their reality.
Truly one of my favourite picture books this year.
