Review: The Quirks Welcome to Normal (The Quirks #1)

The Quirks have just moved to the small town of Normal, Michigan. It’s a lovely town with picket fences, a diner run by a woman who treats all her staff like family, and a great local school. Everything in Normal is, well, normal. Everything except the Quirks, that is.

Molly’s twin sister Penelope can create things from her imagination, like Niblet, the blue furry monster who lives under her bed. Her mother Bree can control people with her mind, her grandfather, Quilliam Quirk, can make time rewind and her little brother Finn is invisible to everyone except Molly. That’s Molly’s ‘quirk’ – she’s immune to the magical powers of her family.

Molly really wants to find a place where they can stay long enough to make friends, but with such a quirky family, it probably won’t be long before they move on again to avoid being noticed. Is it possible for Molly’s family to pretend to be normal so that they can fit in and stay this time?

Welcome to Normal is a fun junior fiction novel about friends, family and trying to fit in. Told from Molly’s perspective, the story follows the Quirks through their first weeks in Normal as they try to fit in, which isn’t all that easy when Finn uses his invisibility to continually play pranks on his family and their neighbours. Penelope hasn’t learnt how to control her quirk yet, so when her imagination runs wild, so does everything around her which makes trying to fit in at school a little tricky.

Funny, entertaining and a little bit silly – the challenge for the town festival, Normal Night, is to build the world’s largest ball of ABC (already been chewed) chewing gum – young readers will love the quirky characters in this story. It is ideal for advanced younger readers who are looking for a longer, more involved story.

Welcome to Normal is the first book in The Quirks series. The second book, The Quirks in Circus Quirkus, was published by Bloomsbury in March 2014 and the third book, The Quirks and the Quirkalicious Birthday is scheduled for release in early 2015.
