Review: Kids' Garden Adventure

Well known Australian gardening guru Don Burke offers kids 25 fun gardening projects in his latest book, Kids’ Garden Adventure.

This small format book offers a range of activities to get kids interacting with the outdoors including growing flowers, moss, strawberries, avocados and pineapples, exploring the garden, and craft ideas using plants.

Activities are generally low-cost. Some are suitable for children as young as four, although other projects may require more patience than is generally shown by the average preschooler, such as growing avocado and pineapple plants, which can take from 1 – 3 years to produce fruit.

Kids’ Garden Adventure is filled with simple activities that help children connect with the outdoors – building scarecrows, growing nasturtiums and watching water bead on the leaves, pressing flowers and building a mini (tabletop) greenhouse. Step-by-step instructions are quite general, but offer a guideline for each process which is generally sufficient to complete the task.

The book is filled with gorgeous photographs, both accompanying the project instructions and as full page images throughout the book.

Kids’ Garden Adventure is just what the name implies, a invitation for young children to have an adventure in their own garden, using natural found items in their yards for craft and taking the first steps to learning about growing their own plants. A perfect birthday or Christmas gift or stocking filler for any aspiring young gardener.
