Review: Hey Jack! Star of the Week

Jack has been chosen Star of the Week. He is in a proud mood, and excited because he will also introduce the famous soccer player Tim Little at assembly.

He finds his friend Aaron in the bathroom upset and crying because his dog has died. Jack imagines how bad he’d feel if he lost his dog Scraps. Jack comforts his friend and tries to think of a way to help soothe Aaron’s unhappiness.

Jack gets a brilliant idea. He offers something very special of his, to his friend. How will Billie feel when she finds out?

I found these books ideal for my reluctant reader, and they were the catalyst for his gradual interest in books and reading. The words were easy, the character funny, and he could relate to the feelings and emotions experienced by Jack and his friends.

This series of illustrated chapter books for emerging readers concentrates on helping children to cope with moods, emotions, and relationships, and work through difficult situations. They are an excellent basis for initiating a one-on-one or class discussion on sensitive topics. Although mainly aimed at boys, there is no reason why girls cannot enjoy Jack’s escapades as well. There are quite a few books in the Hey Jack! series, but Jack can also be found in his friend Billie B Brown’s books.
