Review: Girl Online

Penny struggles to make sense of life, especially after she starts experiences strange dizzy spells. She decides to air her frustrations and hopes in an anonymous blog. Her best friend Elliot is the only one who knows the true identity of “Girl Online”.

When a less than flattering YouTube of Penny goes viral and her panic attacks ramp up, her parents take Penny and Elliot with them on a work stint to New York.

Penny meets the boy of her dreams and wonders if it is all too good to be true. While most of the Girl Online runs at a gentle holiday escape pace, get ready for lift off in the last quarter. When the treachery of social media and the speed at which it can spread lies hits Penny, permanent devastation threatens. Can broken trust ever be repaired?

Even though some of Penny’s early concerns seem on the light side, her raging bouts of anxiety feel very real. The coping techniques she shares along the way are gold. So is her honesty. That’s why I couldn’t put Girl Online down when her world spiralled out of control.

A light read with deeper themes that anchor the narrative.
