Review: Mad Magpie

Guluu the magpie can’t help but feel mad. The butcher birds pick on him and bully him at every opportunity. The elder birds offer him advice to help him stay calm, but it is hard to ignore the hurtful words and actions of the butcher birds.

Eventually, Guluu discovers a way to find focus and calm even when the butcher birds are being mean. He finds strength in his own song, and inspires others to do the same, helping to create a more positive and supportive community for everyone.

Mad Magpie is the third book in a series of morality tales by author/illustrator Gregg Dreise. The previous titles are KooKoo Kookaburra and Silly Birds. A descendant of the Kamilaroi and Yuwalayaay people of south-west Queensland and north-west New South Wales, Gregg’s books are inspired by the wise sayings and knowledge of his Elders.

The book has a strong message about dealing with bullies in a positive way by both seeking the advice of those in authority (elders in the story could be parents, teachers or other carers) and also emphasising the importance of staying calm and focused. As with the previous books in the series, Gregg’s illustrations are eye-catching and visually appealing with traditional motifs and Australian native birds featured in full page scenes from the story and accents on the text pages.

Mad Magpie combines Gregg’s distinctive illustrations with a meaningful story featuring strong anti-bullying and self-esteem themes to create an entertaining picture book that offers an encouraging message to young readers. Ideal for reading at home and as a classroom resource. There are brief teachers' notes available for this title.
