Review: Bird and Bear and the Special Day

Here is a story of discovery; an adventure of sorts experienced by best friends, Bear and Bird. The two set out for a special day in the park, full of surprises. It is Bird’s birthday and she secretly wonders if Bear will remember. They have a whole day ahead of them to enjoy each other’s company. Both are determined to have a memorable time.

Shadows and reflections are included in the surprises. But the greatest one is left for later.

There is a strong sense of freedom and joy through the story. The clever and playful use of opposites in the text is entertaining and instructive. This is an ideal introduction to word exploration for kindergarten and preschool children. The handwritten text is a perfect match for the watercolour wash and pencil used in the whimsy illustrations.

Themes of friendship, and the importance of play and imagination, combine to create a serendipitous atmosphere. Attractively presented from cover-to-cover, the talented, award-winning Ann James has created a delightful and imaginative follow-up to her Bird and Bear.
