Review: The Last Shot

Danby plans to kill the megalomaniac who killed her mother and is trying to take over the world. But is he really a psychotic killer? Every time she thinks she's worked him out, he surprises her. Perhaps it's all in her imagination. She lets down her guard.

Then something more terrifying than her worst fears happens and Danby has to escape. She has no idea if there is anywhere safe to go but she has to try, if it's the last thing she does.

I thought The Last Girl was compelling until I picked up The Last Shot. Reading this second book in the series was like being sucked into a void.
While The Last Girl was written in past tense, this second volume in the The Last trilogy is in present tense. This change hots up the action and makes all the crazy twists in narrative flow like water. The stakes went through the roof and with mind control causing everything living to be a potentially trained-killer enemy. Nowhere was safe.

I couldn't believe Danby and her few allies had any hope of surviving. But I had to keep reading to find out for sure.

I was gasping for breath at the end of this book: the final twist more than freaked me out. I'm not sure I'm prepared to read the third book in the series, The Last Place. If you're into horror, chances are you'll take that final leap.
