It tells the story of a little girl, Hina, who finds a tiny kitten on her doorstep. She and her mother bring it inside, clean it up and make it comfortable. But then, the kitten goes missing…
Sakai’s images really are front and centre of this touching little story. She manages to capture the essence of little Hina, her innocence, her curiosity and her fear. Every gesture and expression is perfect and beautiful.
Hina searches everywhere for the kitten. Inside and outside. She is worried about the poor little kitten being all by itself. She remembers the time she was lost at the store, how she thought she might never see her mother again. She imagines that is how the little kitten must feel and searches even harder.
This is author, Lee’s first book and he has done well to create a lovely character in little Hina, who displays empathy and concern for her kitten. He also shows children how to care for a kitten by gently cleaning it, stroking it, feeding it and making it a bed.
Lee’s story has really been turned into something special by Sakai. The quality of the artwork in this book needs to be seen to be appreciated.
I read this to a seven-year-old and a nine-year-old and both were fascinated by the images. They were not used to seeing art of this quality in a picture book. It prompted them to ask questions – how do you make pictures like that? Were they drawn or painted? How do you get the colours like that? In addition to enjoying a beautiful little story, this book will encourage kids to appreciate quality art.
Whilst the story is simple, Sakai’s enchanting illustrations and unique style make this a beautiful book to hold on to and treasure.
