Review: We're Going on a Bear Hunt: My Adventure Field Guide

Have you ever wondered how clouds are formed, and what is lightning? Did you know that snowflakes are six-sided? These questions and more are answered in this brilliant and informative field guide to the natural world and ignite children’s awareness of the world outside with a spark.

Facts appear like gems to be collected and stored in children’s’ knowledge bank. They equally inform and educate an ageless audience (although the book is aimed at the 6+ age group).

The Bear Hunt is in the sky as well as on the ground. We are introduced to stars and their shapes, sky, earth and ground, mountains, trees, rocks and sea, wind and weather, and all kinds of living things.

Facts are simply presented, therefore easy to conceive. Words in bold lettering are concisely defined and expanded on. From paw prints to poo, we discover ways of identifying all kinds of living creatures. There are activities, recipes, and projects to engage children and awaken them to the importance of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, while encouraging them to seek adventures in the natural world that waits to be explored.

Readers will come away from this book filled with wonder at all they have learnt. Addressed on the last pages are threats to our planet by climate change, pollution, and global warming, and how we can help. Endangered species are touched upon, and an excellent Glossary is included. I found it unbelievable that such a compact book could contain this vast amount of information on so many varied topics.

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt: My Adventure Field Guide, features artwork from the animated television special of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. The text is by Hannah Pang, with the line art by Susannah Chapman. The additional wildlife illustrations are by Mat Williams. Its companion book, My Explorer’s Journal, is also available for children to record their outdoor adventures.
