Review: Lintang and the Pirate Queen
Lintang is always getting into trouble. Sometimes it's not even her fault. But when she tries to protect her mother's pantry from a mischievous Fey, one thing leads to another and it's lucky the house doesn't burn down.
Sometimes Lintang can spin a yarn to wriggle her way out of punishment but not this time, which is the worst because Captain Shakira, the famous pirate queen will share a banquet with everyone on the island – except Lintang.
Determined to make amends, Lintang goes in search of panna leaves to replace the ones she burned, but a deadly mythie attacks her. It's a miracle Lintang and her best friend, Bayani, aren't obliterated on the spot. Now Lintang must convince the islanders that a deadly mythie is on a rampage.
The lives of everyone she loves is at risk but the islanders are used to Lintang's wild stories. No one is prepared to believe her. Until Captain Shakira steps in.
You get the idea.
It's life and death stakes with mythical predatory folk at every turn. Even when Lintang earns her passage on the pirate ship, she can't help doing what she thinks is best rather than obey orders. Then there's the tiny issue of Bayani placing the entire ship in peril by stowing away. Life is one big trail of trouble for Lintang.
Then, just as everything gets more complicated than you'd ever imagine, Lintang misses home.
If you love high action tales and enjoy the magic of a mythical creature or two, you'll love Lintang and the Pirate Queen. But there's more to Lintang's story than that. There's friendship and loyalty and the cost of caring. There's also an entire civilisation to save.
