Review: The Pencil 10th Anniversary Edition

The 10th Anniversary edition of The Pencil promises to delight another generation of early readers with its original and delightful story about beginning something with good intentions, and what happens when things get out of hand.

The Pencil drew a boy named Banjo, who wanted a dog that wanted a cat.

Each consecutive construction demands a name and asks for something else. That all happens in black and white until Kitty the paintbrush is drawn.

Kitty’s appearance fills the world with colour. Houses are built and roads are created. Banjo gets a family, even the pets get partners and friends as the houses fill with material goods and complaints.

Then the rubber enters the scene. Rubbing things out to correct the complaints and drawing them again, is a short-term solution. Chaos ensues when the rubber’s enthusiasm gets out of hand and major images are rubbed out. By now everyone is running to get away from the rubber! Is there a solution to this dilemma? Can the Pencil who started it all, find a way to correct his mistake?

Highly imaginative, with fast-paced action linked together as long as unmeasured string, fills the pages with fun and amusement. I confess I hadn’t read the first edition therefore loved this creative and impressive book that will be celebrated again in another ten years!
