Review: The Day the Buddha Woke Up

This lovely little book called The Day the Buddha Woke Up tells the story of Buddha’s awakening reduced down to a short and beautiful tale aimed at children. In it we follow a prince named Siddhartha through his life on his inquisitive search for happiness and its true meaning.

Gorgeous artwork with earthy textures by world-renowned artist Rima Fujita fill the pages and suit the story perfectly. The vibrant colour palette includes the buddhist orange and gives a feeling of peace and authenticity.

While this book is aimed at children, I feel it delivers a kind and powerful message to slow down, breathe deeply and enjoy the present moment, which should be taken on by both adults and children alike. Reading it aloud with children could provide a good base for further discussion on mindfulness topics or activities.
