Review: NoMax!
NoMax! is a fun and mischievous picture book by the Australian author/illustrator of Was Not Me, Shannon Horsfall.
Horsfall’s vibrant illustrations in NoMax! set the tone immediately with a tiny, tilted halo perched above the head of the cheeky protagonist, an enthusiastic dog, who delights in his name being constantly hollered.
The dog has an angelic heart, but his acts of love do not always please, as he embarks on greater and greater feats to inspire his human Dad to call out the name he hears so often, ‘NoMax!’.
Horsfall’s rhyming text gambols along, as the dog demonstrates his love for his human Dad in every way he can manage, from fetching Dad’s slippers, to fluffing his pillow, to cleaning his plate.
The dog’s love of life is infectious, and his optimistic view of all situations leaves a huge smile on the reader’s face, to match the beautiful, floppy-tongued smile of the dog.
NoMax! is a delightfully funny canine romp, with a little twist in the tail, and is a Children’s Book Council of Australia 2018 Notable Book.
