Meet the Illustrator: Margaret Dewar

Describe your illustration style in ten words or less.
Cartooning, children’s illustration, drawing and digital, varied.

What items are an essential part of your creative space?
Pens and pencils, computer or iPad.

Do you have a favourite artistic medium?
Pencil art, digitally coloured.

Name three artists whose work inspires you.
Escher, May Gibbs, Dr. Seuss.

Which artistic period would you most like to visit and why?
Early 20th Century Art Deco, I love the shapes and patterns with a modern touch, using the imagination of the artist. Many fairy tales were illustrated in this style; those artists created beautiful, timeless works of art.

Who or what inspired you to become an illustrator?
For as long as I can remember, I've loved to draw all the time. It got me into trouble at school many times. I have never wanted to do anything else but draw.

Can you share a photo of your creative work space or part of the area where you work most often? Talk us through it.
My work space is usually in my office where my computers are, but sometimes I create while watching TV with pen or pencil on paper or on the iPad.

What is your favourite part of the illustration process?
The last part where I refine the detail and make sure I have the right amount of contrast, colour and balance, although I love the process all the way through.

What advice would you give to an aspiring illustrator?
Practise drawing what you see. Study perspective. Watch the experts giving demonstrations. Be open to different ways of working. Keep practising in as many styles as you can.

Margaret has been a graphic artist for 35 years, mostly as a Real Estate artist producing line drawings of houses for sale. She later used digital to create photo-realistic images. Cartooning and children’s illustration have been her favourites and so she is currently focusing on these.
