In Opposites there
are seven pages of words and their opposites, with flaps shaped like trees on
every second page, that hide beneath them one of the two subjects.
There is a delightful mouse hiding in fear of his
life, an upside-down crocodile in an uncomfortable position, a tiny echidna
scurrying to safety, and a tiny frog leaping for joy.
There is also an
elephant, a hippo, pelicans, a giraffe, monkeys, a peacock, and lots of obvious
and secret appearances of the long crocodile.
Early learners will not only learn the opposites,
but get to know the parade of animals that this fabulous board book displays.
Full of funny situations, little ones will pick up on them quickly.
In Roald
Dahl’s 1 2 3, the same crocodile monopolises the scenes. The same parade of
animals appear alongside the chiddlers (children) that begin at 1 and end at 10. There
are no flaps to lift here, but the long-nosed croc tries to camouflage himself
so he can get closer to the chiddlers.
Each scene asks if the reader can find where the crocodile is hiding himself or
pretending to be something else.
This is another fun-filled book with lots of joyous
children racing across the page in play upon coloured pages.
Their expressions
speak volumes. Whether the children are running, waiting for a ride, fetching
coconuts, playing, or preparing to snack on something, the crocodile is
preparing for a snack as well!
There is a fantastic ending where a third page
opens up to extend into an extra long view of a scene of chaos with children
and crocodile. Highly suitable for first
books, these two will become toddlers’ favourites with all that’s going on
inside the covers.
