Twelve women who shaped history - some famous in
Australia, some around the world, are found in this interesting collection of
lives.
It represents amazing, courageous, intelligent and resourceful
Australian women and their achievements that have transformed history. Many of these
women’s lives were portrayed in Hollywood movies. Entries begin from late1700s
and go through to early1900s.
Mary Reibey, whose portrait is in our $20 note, was
from convict stock. As a teenager, she was arrested for unknowingly riding a
stolen horse and transported to New South Wales. Mary became Australia’s first great
businesswoman.
The inspirational life of Tarenore, a Tomeginee
woman, began just before European settlers arrived in Tasmania. As a young
girl, she was sold as a slave to seal hunters. She allowed nothing of what
happened to her stop her from becoming a warrior for her people.
Included in
these excellent profiles is Opera singer Nellie Melba; Mary Lee, who along with
other women and men, started the Women’s Suffrage League; Politician Edith
Cowan; Tilly Aston, Disability Activist who began Vision Australia and the first Braille Library in our country; Rose
Quong, Chinese-Australian Actor, Lecturer and Writer; Elizabeth Kenny, Nurse
and Medical Innovator, who worked world-wide with polio sufferers; Annette
Kellerman, Swimmer and Movie Star whose choreography inspired synchronized
swimming; Lores Bonney, Aviation Pioneer who in 1932 flew solo all around the
Australian coast. Her long-distance record has never been broken. Emily Kame
Kngwarreye, one of Australia’s greatest artists and Ruby Payne-Scott, one of
the world’s first radio astronomers.
Sophie Beer has created inspiring images to
accompany the equally inspiring text by Pamela Freeman that showcases these
brilliant women’s lives. Twelve convincing examples of how any child can become
what they dream of being.
