Review: Mr Walker and the Dessert Delight

The Mr Walker series of books by Jess Black are inspired by a real-life dog by the same name.

Originally trained and used as a Guide Dog, it was deemed that his gentle and affectionate Labrador personality was more suitable to an Ambassador role.

Since 2017, and under the care of the hotel manager, Mr Walker has made the Park Hyatt Melbourne his home.

This story is a delicious concoction of cooking, competitiveness, and the love of good food – even when you are a dog.

It’s a delightful adventure that has Mr Walker vying for attention against the delightful aromas, recipes and celebrities. Will he get a taste of any of it?

The Park Hyatt Melbourne anniversary party is almost here. Celebrations include the appearance of famous Celebrity chef Grethe Schmidt with the launch of her new cookbook book as part of the festivities.

As an introduction to her skills, her Paris-Brest impresses everyone. She explains that the pastry dessert was created in 1910 in celebration of the long-distance bicycle race from Paris to Brest and back again.

Chef Remy believes that Grethe plans to upstage him. She has already rearranged his kitchen, moved around his pots and pans and placed the sauces in alphabetical order. What next?

Two brilliant chefs together! Mr Walker’s nose smells trouble. And he’s never wrong.
There is also the dilemma of keeping their recipes secret from one another. If chaos erupts, there will be no winner. Can Grethe’s rose petal jam and mouth-watering scones win peace with Remy?

Grethe intends to dazzle the party guests with her signature German pastry, a tree cake named Baumkuchen. But disaster strikes at the last minute.  Can the croquembouche save the day?

Sara Acton’s delicate black and white illustrations add a beauty and elegance that matches the Park Hyatt’s surroundings. For those interested in knowing how Mr Walker’s adventures began, the first book, The Tales of Mr Walker: a hotel dog with a nose for adventure will fill you in. Look out for Mr Walker Gets the Inside Scoop which has been released simultaneously with this title, with more coming in August.

There is a list of all the staff and family members that are part of Mr Walker’s life at the end under Friends of Mr Walker. This helps readers familiarise themselves with the Labrador’s family and friends.
