Drawn in right at the opening of the cover, the
stunning end pages filled my eyes with where to look first?
The delightful
collection of so many different types of tractors made a startling starting
point. Two pages covered in activity and colour. All this before I even got to
the story!
Frank loves tractors. His world revolves around
them. He is off to the library again to borrow books on – you guessed it –
tractors!
He tries to explain to his mum what they mean to him. In
extraordinary and detailed rhyming verse, Frank describes his passion for those
large machines and why they can’t be replaced in his heart and mind.
The wheels and the engine and all that they carry,
like rakes and a hoe, and the seat and the gears. Levers and buttons and pedals to press… The list goes on and on.
You
used to like trains, his mum reminds him. But Frank is older and smarter since that time, before his
knowledge of tractors had reached its peak. Mum attempts to persuade Frank to
try a book on some other subject. Everything else is boring to Frank. He points
out the disadvantages of every other thing mum suggests. He brings home his
point with an astonishing pronouncement!
I loved this happy book so much! From the
illustrations of girls driving the tractors to the adoration Frank feels and
extols on the glory of tractors and all the factors of why he loves them so
much.
The pages are filled with the most stunning and
detailed images by Jenny Lovlie that they make you want to woop with delight.
Every image is a story. There are rural settings and farmyards, hills and
dales, tractors churning the ground, bailing hay and loading up whatever they
can. The pages are full of them.
Davina Bell’s entertaining and perfect rhyming text
is a joy to read and will be a joy to be heard. I can’t fault this book. I will
share it with my little one but won’t part with it! It’s mine!
