Junior Review: The Wizards of Once

Xar is one of the only wizards who has not gotten his magic by age thirteen (even though he was supposed to get it when he was twelve) which is embarrassing considering his father is king Enchanter Encanzo.

Even though Xar has no magic yet he is still full of himself and overconfident, trying to prove himself to his father.

Wish is a scruffy little warrior who is the daughter of Queen Warrior Sychorax. She is a shy little oddball who has an eye-patch on her left eye and an odd limp. Like Xar, is trying to impress her not-easily-impressed mother.

Wizards and Warriors are sworn enemies and have been ever since Warriors invaded the Wild Woods. Ever since they saw magic, the Warriors have been destroying everything magic which led to the supposed extinction of the horrid witches.

When Xar and Wish and Bodkin (Wish’s personal thirteen-year-old bodyguard) meet one dark night in the Wild Woods, their world becomes very different. Their meeting leads to an extraordinary adventure involving a lot of magic, witches and excitement.

Will Xar and Wish be able to save the world from the evil king witch? Or impress their stern parents?

I like this series a lot. Author Cressida Cowell wrote the famous book series How To Train Your Dragon which is one of my favourites. I also love it because it is an action-packed fantasy novel, which is one of my favourite type of books. The words act like a river in my mind. There are not too many difficult words, but they are not too easy to read either. The description and images are a thrilling part of the book.

I think this book is for ages 7 to 13 because it is an easy and exciting read, so if you do not like reading then this is the perfect book for you. I also think these ages are appropriate because it is not scary unless you are very young.
