Review: Tim & Tigon

Tim & Tigon is a young reader’s edition of On the Trail of Genghis Khan.

It was especially written to inspire and encourage young people to follow their dreams of adventure.

Tim Cole’s incredible journey does more than that. It sends the reader on magnetising and educational travels transported by the illuminating prose.

Detailed maps, like stopping stations, are included and follow the trails he travels.

Tim Cole was barely able to ride a horse when he set out. He was also a novice at everything else. Russian was the only language he spoke other than English. Drawn to the ‘traditional nomadic life’ he wanted to realize a dream of travelling 10 000 kilometres on horseback, across the Eurasian steppe from Mongolia to Hungary.

Although he had planned his routes, carried a satellite phone, computer, and video camera, he had little experience or knowledge of the people he would meet, their culture, traditions or beliefs.

We accompany Tim on a journey which transforms his life, shapes his future, teaches him to overcome fear and survive amazing challenges. He is given the pup Tigon as a travelling companion, and discovers friendship, loyalty, and the enduring love between a human and an animal.

The book is rich in historical information on the Mongol and Kazakh nomads and the areas they journeyed through. This not-only travel memoir reveals wide-ranging information on how and why these people continue to hold tight to tradition. They worship their horses; respect all their animals, each other, and especially the land of which they are so familiar. They also bend to the will and timing of the seasons which means survival for them and their animals.

Classed as an adventurer, Tim Cole is in fact a conqueror – of ignorance, fear, and limitation. He overcame extreme temperatures, hunger, sickness, despair and loneliness. He came to love with a passion, the open spaces, mountains, ravines and rushing water and wildness that he experienced. But most of all, it was from the people he met, that he took away the most.

Australian Adventurer of the Year 2006, Cole lectures widely in schools, organisations and community groups. He has completed a film series for ABC TV and ARTE in Europe.  He visits Mongolia every year and takes guide trips for World Expeditions.

This is a book not to be missed with more content than you expect.
