Review: The Man in the Water

Sixteen-year-old Shaun finds a dead body in the lake. He tells the police, but when they return to the lake, the body is gone.

The police don’t believe there ever was a body. Shaun’s mum thinks he’s not coping with his father’s own death and is making things up.

Only Shaun’s best friend Will believes him, so they decide to investigate the missing body themselves — to uncover the truth and prove Shaun was right.

But what starts as some simple snooping and asking questions, quickly turns into a dangerous investigation that will reveal something sinister about Shaun and Will’s outback town.

This is a brilliant YA/middle grade mystery adventure for readers who love to solve a puzzle.

With real and relatable characters who are experiencing the challenges of everyday life, it’s the kind of story readers will really connect with.

You get to know these characters — their lives, hopes and fears. And then you go on an adventure with them — something a little bit out there but not completely out of the realm of possibility. I think young readers will really love this aspect of the book. It's a series of events that could happen, even it's not likely to happen to you or someone you know. It creates a brilliant 'what would I do in this situation?' feel to the story.

This is an engaging and addictive read. David Burton is a master storyteller, and he has created a cast of authentic and interesting characters here. If you like a good mystery, definitely check out The Man in the Water.
