Review: Elizabella and The Haunting of Lizard Lake

This is the third book in the Elizabella series by author-illustrator sisters Zoe and Georgia Norton-Lodge.

In this book, Elizabella and her class are off to a school camp to Lizard Lake, which promises lots of opportunity for our prank-loving girl and her bestie to have fun.

Elizabella’s beloved lizard, Larry, is totally on board and stows away into her luggage, delighted at the possibility of meeting new lizards - after all, they’re off to Lizard Lake. Maybe he will make the camp his new home.

Back at home, though, Elizabella’s family are frantic at his disappearance, searching wildly for the missing lizard, appalled that he went missing on their watch.

Totally oblivious to the mayhem they left behind, Elizabella and Larry are having a great time. But there is a mystery to be solved – something strange and spooky is happening on the lake at night time.

And the camp seems to be short one counsellor. Elizabella is totally ready to sneak out and investigate.

There is lots of humour here, with a few jibes directed towards the positivity movement, with the eccentric camp counsellors being hellbent on turning everything, especially misdemeanours by the kids, into an opportunity for positive thinking.

Overall, a rollicking tale featuring the sorts of things kids would love to have actually happening on school camps.
