The term flexitarianism
has been coined to describe those who have become more ‘part-time’ vegans and
for many young people who are driving this trend a healthier lifestyle and
concern for the environment are motivating factors.
All this makes the publication of this new book by well-known health coach and vegan food-blogger, Niki Webster, extremely timely.
It is an attractively presented book with stylised graphic art illustrations and embellishments as well as the beautifully photographed food offerings.
Starting off with a personal note from the author on
why she has chosen veganism the introduction explains the concept of the choice
and goes on to point out animal welfare and environmental justifications. It
continues with some useful information about vegan fashion, some commonly asked
questions and the ethics of plant-based choices.
Part Two kicks off with a thorough overview of health
benefits and details nutritional guidelines which underpin these benefits.
Part Three is headed The Vegan Kitchen and
offers sound advice for setting up for success with staples, substitutes, and
‘how-to’ instructions for basics like nut cheese and plant milk. Delicious
sounding recipes for breakfasts, lunches, mains, snacks and extras and desserts
follow with simple to follow procedures accompanied by tips from the author.
The book concludes with a glossary and an index making this an extremely user-friendly source of information, especially for those who are just starting out on either veganism or just cooking. All in all, whether for use as a personal cookbook, a non-fiction title with a difference or as a guide for Food Technology students this makes a superb addition to any shelf of recipe books.
