Meet The illustrator: Alejandro Echavez

Name
: Alejandro Echavez

Describe your illustration style in ten words or less.
Bold, colorful, vibrant and playful.

What items are an essential part of your creative space?
The most essential items of my creative space are my reference books, my pencils and my sketch books. This is where all my ideas come together.

Do you have a favourite artistic medium?
I will always love to do my sketches in pencil and I don't think that will ever change. There is a personal connection with the pencil that could not be replaced. My favorite media could be  acrylics and digital.

Name three artists whose work inspires you.
I think like many artists of my generation, I was inspired by Disney, but in particular Peter Ellanshaw also Thomas Kinkade and Howard McWilliam.

Which artistic period would you most like to visit and why?
I would love to visit the Neo Impressionist time, and see how Van Gogh worked in his paintings and also find out all the in and outs of his process and inspirations.

Who or what inspired you to become an illustrator?
I was inspired to become a children's book illustrator by Oliver Jeffers 4 years ago. The connection and the powerful message of a picture book that could change someone's life forever fascinate me.

Can you share a photo of your creative work space or part of the area where you work most often? Talk us through it.
The part that I spent most of my time is my drafting table, there is where I create the storyboard and organize the ideas that will complement the story.

What is your favourite part of the illustration process?
My favorite part of the illustration process is the beginning where the idea, angle and composition bring the script to life and add the shape to the story.

What advice would you give to an aspiring illustrator?
My advice for an aspiring illustrator is simple. The road ahead is harsh so be passionate about it, keep going no matter what, grow from your mistakes and lastly have fun and enjoy every moment of it!

Alejandro is a freelance illustrator, painter and storyboard artist specialising in landscapes, sea scapes and children’s illustrations. He currently resides in Long Island, NY, but spent his formative years in Bogota, Colombia, where he first showed an interest in art at the very young age of 6. More than an interest, it was a natural talent that his family nurtured, and developed.

A kid at heart, his work is often colourful and playful in theme. He is not scared of bright colours, which he uses to create movement and vibrancy in his work. Alejandro is currently working on children’s books but hopes to continue creating the vivid canvas and artwork he is known for.
