Junior Review: Black Brother, Black Brother

Have you ever wondered how someone can go from being lost, hurt and bullied to being confident? If this journey to confidence after dealing with prejudice interests you, then you should read Black Brother, Black Brother by Author Jewell Parker Rhodes.

Donte and his brother Trey Ellison are bi-racial kids. Trey is the light skinned brother whereas Donte the darker skinned.

They both go to the same private school where they get treated differently because of the color of their skin.

Donte has gotten arrested, because of an accusation that he threw a pencil.

His mind is in a state of shock imagining how someone can be so biased just because of how he looks. Donte has faced prejudice all his life, but this is the first time he has gotten affected.

He decides to get revenge by joining fencing to defeat the bully and fencing captain Alan.

But, in fencing he finds an escape. He can be free and fight off all the bullies who want to hurt him. With the help of Coach Arden Jones, Donte learns how to become a better person and deal with the haters.

Author Jewell Parker Rhodes explains in Black Brother Black Brother how bullying takes a toll on a child’s mental state.
